It is predicted that by the year 2050, there could be more plastic in our oceans than fish. Almost half of all plastic EVER manufactured has been made since 2000. Nearly a million plastic bottles are sold PER MINUTE around the world. 40% of plastic is made for packaging which is used once, then discarded. It is estimated that 8.3 BILLION plastic straws pollute our world’s beaches.

 It was this last stat about plastic straws that we, the ones who would soon become the Net Zero team, contemplated as we sat and enjoyed a drink. We were looking out at the beach on a beautiful sunny day in Vancouver, BC. Knowing these facts and sipping from our single-use plastic straws at the same time made it hard to enjoy the breathtaking scenery.

 How could we when we knew that just seconds after our waiter took away our drinks to bring us another round, those straws would go directly in the trash and start on their journey to polluting the water and beaches we were admiring. When the next round came, each drink with another new plastic straw, we knew we had to do something.

 It was at that moment that we decided to commit to creating less waste in our daily lives. And, as often happens when you are enjoying a drink on a beach, a short time later we decided that we wanted to go even further than that. We wouldn’t just reduce our waste, we would try to become a driving force in others reducing their waste as well. We would become a propeller of the low waste movement!

 And Net Zero was born.
